At a recent meeting, a member of Christ the King posed the question, "Do we have a list of people with known health conditions?" The question arose from a discussion regarding church Emergency Preparedness and Response. The individual shared personal health information that could affect treatment in an emergency situation.
Health information and privacy are enormous issues. Who should know? Where would such a list be kept? How could it be kept safe? I posed the health list question to others in our Parish /Community Faith Nurse Network. Generally, no northern suburban church keeps such a list. Some members do choose to share their health needs with their P/CFNs but most do not.
The consensus was that health information is personal and management up to the individual. What does that mean? Do you carry a list of your current medications in your billfold/purse? (**A foldable list is available for you at our Health and Wellness Center!) Do you wear a Health Alert bracelet or necklace? Is it immediately checked for in an emergency situation when someone is unresponsive? Who knows about your health? Family? Friend? Do they know what your needs are in an emergency situation? Does usual emergency response require modification for your health situation?
Appropriate care and response depends on having the right information. As your CtK Parish/Community Faith Nurses, we welcome your input and ideas for keeping our members safe and healthy! Call 651-633-4674 and ask to speak to a Parish/Community Faith Nurse.
